Behavioral Modification & Consulting Services
Free initial phone consultation, $75 for the initial consult session, $50 for all sessions thereafter*, $35 for veterinary consult. An additional fee of $10 per session surcharge may be applied for dogs being treated for aggression to humans.
Behavioral modification is for dogs with problem behaviors beyond the scope of basic obedience training or for dogs requiring other specialized training. While tailored to your individual situation, behavioral modification or other targeted training also incorporates many, if not all, elements of basic obedience.
We start with an initial phone consultation (for which there is no charge), then schedule the initial consultation session, where we’ll observe and evaluate your dog, discuss your goals, the training and commitment level that will be needed, prognosis and estimated length of training/number of additional sessions*. We'll develop a training and/or rehabilitation plan and begin practicing the necessary skills. All training and rehab plans are tailored for your 'real life' situation and will incorporate reasonable training methods that are achievable for your family and lifestyle. Following the initial consultation, additional sessions are scheduled as needed, usually one to three weeks apart. The initial consultation usually takes one to four hours, follow up sessions typically last about an hour, sometimes more, rarely less. We don't set rigid time limits on the sessions because it’s important that you don’t feel rushed or have progress interrupted simply because "our hour is up". When scheduling sessions, it’s best to find a time when all family members can be present, and if you have friends or non-resident family members that visit frequently and are affected by the behaviors or would benefit from understanding the training process, they're welcome to attend (within reason, of course). Some sessions may be conducted at an alternate location to facilitate training, such as the vet’s office, grooming facility, pet friendly store, etc. For aggression cases, you may be required to purchase additional safety equipment, such as a humane basket muzzle. Needed equipment is reasonably priced and provided at cost. All training includes handouts, written summaries following each session, phone and email support at no additional charge (further defined in services contract). In cases where evaluation reveals something that might require medical attention or veterinary consult, I will provide a written summary for the vet, and at your request, accompany you to the veterinary appointment. NOTE: Canid trainers are not licensed to diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medications. Canid will work with your vet, sharing our observations and recommendations to arrive at a suitable solution.
To get started, you’ll be asked to complete a brief questionnaire and return it along with a $25 non-refundable deposit, which will be deducted from your total fee due at the time of the first lesson. On the day of the first session, you’ll also be asked to sign a services contract/release of liability and show proof of vaccination.
*Length of training and number of follow on sessions varies based on the type and severity of the problem(s) or other specialized training needed, and is dependent on the amount of time and commitment the owner is able to invest. Each dog is unique in their response to treatment/training and each human has a different level of ability and confidence. Some clients are comfortable executing their plan independently, others prefer more support and coaching. Some cases need no additional sessions, most cases require at least one, and some situations may need as many as three to five. Higher numbers of additional sessions are spaced out over longer time periods. The need for additional sessions may be recommended by the trainer or requested by the client. Recommendations for additional sessions by the trainer are just that, and the client is not obligated or required to schedule/purchase additional sessions.
